ABOUT THE SHIP

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HISTORIC COLUMBIA III

After fifty years of being an integral participant in Canada’s coastal history, her classic lines are still recognized and admired at every port in British Columbia.

The 68′ Columbia III outshines them all. Stately. Graceful. Quiet. Steadfast. Beautiful.

The CIII was completely refurbished in the early 1990s with great attention to detail and passenger enjoyment. From her wheelhouse with the latest navigational electronics to the large covered aft deck, the CIII is immaculate, and the woodworking is of the finest quality. The gleaming exterior, polished brass, spacious dining room rich in varnished mahogany and modern galley invite you aboard. Six lovely staterooms, three heads (fancy boating term for toilets), and two showers with plenty of hot water ensure your comfort. We also have an extensive onboard library focusing on wildlife, natural history, local interests and always a dictionary.

The Columbia III is heated by a diesel furnace with radiators throughout the boat and a charming diesel fireplace in the saloon. If the weather turns foul, the Mothership is the perfect place to curl up with a book or watch the velvety, green coastline slide by the large salon windows.

When the ship is underway, the wheelhouse becomes everyone’s favourite place. With its expansive view, large chart table, fascinating computer-generated moving chart display and plush leather seat for three (and standing room for everyone), the Skipper is rarely ever alone. Even the engine room is a must-see part of every tour, and the Skipper is happy to show off the spotless machinery.

Featured in such books as Classic Wooden Yachts, she embodies a rare sense of quality and integrity not found in many other vessels.

The Columbia III exudes a rich, warm sense of place that perfectly complements the coastal areas we visit. Equally important, our vessel and crew are fully approved and certified annually by Transport Canada and the safety equipment is maintained to the highest standards.

What Happens In the Off-Season

During the winter months, we’re involved in working for the protection of British Columbia’s wildlife and its habitat. We actively participate in current issues threatening the beauty and integrity of our coast by working with and supporting many organizations advocating for Canada’s wilderness conservation. Some of those organizations are listed here. We have also established good working relations with the First Nations BC in our tour areas and have signed, or are in negotiations to sign, their protocol agreements.

Mothership Adventures operates from our remote BC west coast island home in the southernmost corner of the Great Bear Rainforest, where we have lived since 1979.

With water access only, boats, kayaks, and the ocean are a daily part of life year-round. Here, the COLUMBIA III is sheltered in her custom boatshed during the off-season and receives continual care, maintenance, upgrades, attention and, as any wooden boat owner knows, much of our time. She is well-loved!
